Iranians arrest 14 squirrels for spying

"Iranian intelligence operatives recently detained over a dozen squirrels found within the nation's borders, claiming the rodents were serving as spies for Western powers determined to undermine the Islamic Republic.
"In recent weeks, intelligence operatives have arrested 14 squirrels within Iran's borders," state-sponsored news agency IRNA reported. "The squirrels were carrying spy gear of foreign agencies, and were stopped before they could act, thanks to the alertness of our intelligence services."

Iranian police commander Esmaeil Ahmadi-Moqadam confirmed the report, saying that a number of squirrels had been caught bearing foreign spy gear within Iran's borders.

"I heard of this but I have no specific knowledge on the subject," he said. He refused to give further details.

Recently, Iran has increased its efforts in combating espionage by the West. The use of rodents has not been documented in the past."

Dirty Laundry, Clean Thyself!

Soap is so 20th century. Scientists in Indiana, Wisconsin and Australia have developed nanotechnology-based coatings that clean themselves and could be used in everything from silk shirts to windshields. Besides the added convenience, the new materials could reduce the use of environmentally destructive cleaners while killing potentially deadly bacteria.

The three teams of scientists took different approaches to self-cleaning materials.

Clothes "with self-cleaning properties will become a standard feature of future textiles," said Walid Daoud, a scientist at the University of Monash in Australia, who coated silk and wool with anatase titanium dioxide, a common pigment already used in products.

The scientist then stained both nanotech treated fabrics and non-treated fabrics with red wine and exposed them to simulated sunlight.

After 20 hours, the stains on the nanotech-treated fabrics were almost completely gone, while the stains on conventional fabrics looked virtually the same. Sunlight reacts with the coating to break apart organic molecules like dyes, turning them into carbon dioxide and water at room temperature, noted study co-author Wing Sze.

While the researchers themselves don't wear nanotech treated fabrics, "we are currently collaborating with a famous textile company for doing mill-trials," said Sze. "We believe it won't be long before the product appears on the market."

The non-toxic fabrics retain the feel and look of wool and silk.

and britt daniel. well. what can i say. this man is adorable. does he get in front of a mirror before he comes out on stage and purposefully mess up his hair and make it asymmetrical? does he practice in front of this mirror to perfect his adorable facial expressions? and how does he know exactly when to turn his profile to the audience to make himself that much sexier?

LOVE THIS!

It started with the bathroom around the corner from "Endor Vendors" at the Disney MGM Studios Theme Park back in the early 90's. There above the toilet seat cover dispenser was a big upside-down pink triangle a whole row of them. Now, as you may know, upside-down pink triangles are a popular symbol of gay pride, a little sign saying "gay spoken here."

So I thought, that seems a little odd, all these upside-down pink triangles here in the men's room. I guess the interior designer thought it would be a little inside joke. I mean, one could just as easily made the yellow triangles upside-down and reversed it, removing any subversive reference. But then I saw it again and again, pink triangles that didn't seem to be there by chance.

I had to get these on film. It became a scavenger hunt at every Disney theme park. Now please remain seated as we begin our triangle travelogue.

i haven't forgotten about my darling little blog. its been INSANE with all the moving shit. that's my excuse.

friday was my last day at abt/2nd job. THANK YOU SWEET JESUS. oh the things i could say. about abt. about management of abt. about my boss. about how that place destroyed a part of my soul. but its not worth the effort it would take. i am just SO glad its done. i did the best i could, especially since i didn't agree with 95% of the things i did.

upside; i met some amazing people. i had to get past all the shit heads first, but given different circumstances i bet i could have been good friends with many of them.

TODAY was my last day at full circle/full time job. there aren't words to describe how free i feel. the work i did at the adoption agency was amazing. i helped people in a way i didn't know i was capable of. but i will NEVER, EVER, EVER regret my decision to leave them. FUCK YOU MARLA. FUCK THAT BULLSHIT. i'm so glad its over. SOOO GLAD.

i also met some amazing people there and i sincerely hope they get out of there asap. the agency is on its way out (mark my words).... i give it a couple more years tops.

enough of that. sheesh!

now the easy part...yeah...really. move. find a real job. don't hate my new job. make a ton of money and live it up. that's the plan. ANY AND EVERYONE is invited to come visit!

Of course, the president being the president, he played dumb when asked about whether or not artists should be paid royalties for radio play:

Rubber Ducks End 15-Year Odyssey

"Hundreds of rubber ducks are expected to appear off the coast of Cornwall - having been afloat at sea for the past 15 years.

The wayward bath toys have covered 17,000 miles since they accidentally fell overboard in the Pacific Ocean during a storm in January, 1992.

They were among a consignment of 28,800 plastic ducks, beavers, turtles and frogs that were being taken from Hong Kong to Washington State in the US.

Seattle oceanographer Curtis Ebbesmeyer has been monitoring the toys as a means of mapping ocean currents.

He is interested to see where they come ashore, with some of the toys apparently having reached the east coast of America.

The Daily Express quoted him as saying: "It's now inevitable that they will get caught up in the Atlantic currents and will turn up on English beaches.

If a toy is returned to the manufacturer the finder can claim a £50 reward.

But the ducks are far more valuable if they are sold privately as curiosity items - fetching up to £1,000.

The plastic animals have already reached places as diverse as Indonesia, Australia and South America.

But Alaska has proved a popular washing up point for the washtime toys.

Between 1993 and 2005 Alaska residents Dean Orbison and his son Tyler collected 121 plastic animals as they came ashore near the city of Sitka."

Vancouver patient oozes green blood

"Doctors at Vancouver's St. Paul's Hospital came across something highly illogical when they tried to put an arterial line into a patient about to undergo surgery: his blood was dark green.

The green blood — reminiscent of the Vulcan blood found in Mr. Spock of Star Trek fame — came as a bit of a shock to Dr. Alana Flexman and her colleagues, who report on the unusual case in this week's issue of the journal The Lancet.

The 42-year-old man was already a bit of a medical departure. He had fallen asleep while kneeling, and developed compartment syndrome in both legs.

The potentially dangerous condition involves a buildup of pressure in deep muscle tissue — in this case in the legs — and unless the pressure was relieved, permanent nerve damage could have been sustained.

As surgical staff prepared the man for the middle-of-the-night emergency operation, Flexman and a colleague attempted to insert a line into a wrist artery.

rterial lines are used to monitor blood pressure during an operation; any blood that flows when the line is inserted into the artery should be vivid red, the sign it has been oxygenated.

But in this case, which occurred in October 2005, it was not.

"During insertion, we normally see arterial blood come out. That's how we know we're in the right place. And normally that blood is bright red, as you would expect in an artery," Flexman said in an interview Thursday.

"But in his case, the blood kept coming back as dark green instead of bright red.

"It was sort of a green-black. … Like an avocado skin maybe."

The reaction in the room? "We were very concerned, obviously," said Flexman, who is training in anesthesia at the hospital.

Medication drug may be green cause

Samples were rushed off to the lab, which quickly ruled out a dangerous condition called methemoglobin, in which the hemoglobin in the blood can't bind to oxygen.

While the lab worked, so did the operating team. The man came through the surgery well.

The next day, the lab reported it had detected sulfhemoglobin, a condition thought to be triggered by some medications.

"It's so rare that we don't have a perfect understanding how it happens, but some drug donates a sulphur group that binds to the hemoglobin molecule and prevents it from binding to oxygen," Flexman explains. "And that gives it the green colour."

She and her colleagues believe the condition may have been brought on by the man's migraine medication, sumatriptan, which he was taking in higher-than-advised doses, though they can't prove it.

Green blood can be found in some forms of life such as some marine worms. But it is a condition normally associated with science fiction and not medical texts.

Mr. Spock, the Enterprise's science officer in the famous TV series, was said to have the green blood of his father, who belonged to the race of pointy-eared, logic-seeking Vulcans.

According to Star Trek lore, however, Vulcans have green blood because the oxidizing agent in their blood is copper, and not iron."

Evaristti said he has the "right" to "create a non-violent state of pluralism and tolerance" on the mountain, which "doesn't belong to France alone."
"As France has taken the right to conduct nuclear testing in French Polynesia thousands of kilometres away, it would be a clear case of double-standards if they now prevented me from occupying a small piece of land for peaceful purposes," he said.

The stunt was not expected to be well-received by the mayor of Chamonix, Michel Charlet, who in December last year called the project "stupid and illegal."

The artist said earlier he had put together a 15-strong team to lug some 1,200 litres (320 gallons) of paint mixed with water up one of Mont Blanc's peaks where the liquid will be poured out to create a red mark measuring 2,500 square metres (27,000 square feet).
The artist will foot the project's 50,000-euro (66,000-dollar) bill himself.

Often in the headlines for his provocative projects, Evaristti caused an outcry in 2000 with an exhibit in Denmark's Trapholt modern art museum that featured gold fish swimming in blenders. Evaristti's exhibit gave visitors the choice of switching on the machine.
"I wanted people to confront their consciences, their inner judgement, their instincts, to press the button of death or not," the artist said at the time."

"SANTA ANA, Calif., April 25 — Anyone convicted of a crime knows a debt to society often must be paid in jail. But a slice of Californians willing to supplement that debt with cash (no personal checks, please) are finding that the time can be almost bearable.

For offenders whose crimes are usually relatively minor (carjackers should not bother) and whose bank accounts remain lofty, a dozen or so city jails across the state offer pay-to-stay upgrades. Theirs are a clean, quiet, if not exactly recherché alternative to the standard county jails, where the walls are bars, the fellow inmates are hardened and privileges are few.

Many of the self-pay jails operate like secret velvet-roped nightclubs of the corrections world. You have to be in the know to even apply for entry, and even if the court approves your sentence there, jail administrators can operate like bouncers, rejecting anyone they wish.

“I am aware that this is considered to be a five-star Hilton,” said Nicole Brockett, 22, who was recently booked into one of the jails, here in Orange County about 30 miles southeast of Los Angeles, and paid $82 a day to complete a 21-day sentence for a drunken driving conviction.

“It’s clean here,” she said, perched in a jail day room on the sort of couch found in a hospital emergency room. “It’s safe and everyone here is really nice. I haven’t had a problem with any of the other girls. They give me shampoo.”

For roughly $75 to $127 a day, these convicts — who are known in the self-pay parlance as “clients” — get a small cell behind a regular door, distance of some amplitude from violent offenders and, in some cases, the right to bring an iPod or computer on which to compose a novel, or perhaps a song.

Many of the overnighters are granted work furlough, enabling them to do most of their time on the job, returning to the jail simply to go to bed (often following a strip search, which granted is not so five-star).

The clients usually share a cell, but otherwise mix little with the ordinary nonpaying inmates, who tend to be people arrested and awaiting arraignment, or federal prisoners on trial or awaiting deportation and simply passing through."

According to The Salt Lake Tribune, Utah County District 65 Chairman Don Larsen has submitted a formal resolution to oppose the devil’s plan to destroy the country -- to be discussed this weekend at the Utah County Republican Convention.

“In order for Satan to establish his ‘New World Order’ and destroy the freedom of all people as predicted in the scriptures, he must first destroy the U.S.,” Larsen’s resolution states. “[It is] insidious for its stealth and innocuousness.”

Larsen’s proposal to defeat Satan? Close the borders to illegal immigrants to “prevent the destruction of the U.S. by stealth invasion.”

Some bored New Jersey college kids turned a snowy night into a kick ass piece of art.

Nic, Daniel, Garrett Ian, Daniel , Justin and Craig are engineering and computer science students at New Jersey Institute of Technology, so when they saw that mother nature was dropping some white stuff on the ground outside, they decided to construct a wonderfully nerdy shrine to their favorite Italian plumber. Apparently, they used a string grid to get it, right. We're not quite sure what that means, but the result sure is cool. link here.

The US Post Office has removed clocks from 37,000 postal outlets in order to alleviate the problem of people feeling like they're waiting in line for two long. A clockless atmosphere will apparently encourage a state of meditative interest in the workings of the postal service, without distracting with the sense of time's fleeting passage.

This sounds like a joke, but it's being reported by the Houston Chronicle: The USPS is removing clocks from post offices in order to allow customers to better "focus on the postal service."

"We want people to focus on postal service and not the clock," said Stephen Seewoester, Dallas spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service.

Um, correct us if we're wrong here but:

• People carry timepieces.

•The post office is not a casino. People aren't going to lose themselves in the fun and mail more letters than they'd originally intended.

Nasa has plan for unstable astronauts

"CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - What would happen if an astronaut came unglued in space and, say, destroyed the ship's oxygen system or tried to open the hatch and kill everyone aboard?

That was the question on some minds after the apparent breakdown of Lisa Nowak, arrested in Orlando this month on charges she tried to kidnap and kill a woman she regarded as her rival for another astronaut's affections.

It turns out NASA has a detailed set of written procedures for dealing with a suicidal or psychotic astronaut in space. The documents, obtained this week by The Associated Press, say the astronaut's crewmates should bind his wrists and ankles with duct tape, tie him down with a bungee cord and inject him with tranquilizers if necessary.

"Talk with the patient while you are restraining him," the instructions say. "Explain what you are doing, and that you are using a restraint to ensure that he is safe."

The instructions do not spell out what happens after that.

The checklist says say astronauts who crack up can be restrained and then offered oral Haldol, an anti-psychotic drug used to treat agitation and mania, and Valium. If the astronaut won't cooperate, the drugs can be forcibly given with a shot to the arm. Crew members are instructed to stay with the tied-up astronaut to monitor vital signs.

During missions in 1985 and 1995, shuttle commanders put padlocks on the spaceships' hatches as a precaution since they didn't know the scientists aboard very well."

A Florida family was shocked on Christmas day when the Bratz doll Santa had brought for a little girl had some very un-merry things to say. According to the father, the doll had some choice words for his daughter — more precisely, the f-word and the b-word.

The doll sings a song, and when the daughter, six-year-old Kristina Arse, heard exactly what the song was, she brought it to her father’s attention. “I actually heard at the end some bad words, and I was freaking out,” said father Luis. “I was very upset about it.”

CHINA GROVE, N.C. -- A young China Grove girl unwrapped a Bratz doll on Christmas morning and found a surprise Santa certainly didn’t plant.

Inside the box, under the doll’s head, were three pounds of marijuana. Rowan County detectives say the drugs landed at the wrong house.

According to investigators, the girl’s mother bought the doll from an auction on eBay. When it was delivered to her apartment, it looked just like it had come straight from the manufacturing plant, so she wrapped it and put it under the tree.

The mother called 911 on Christmas Day when she realized what was in the box. Capt. John Sifford of the Rowan County Sheriff’s Department said hiding the drugs in merchandise is just another way to move them. “Drugs are sent through the mail, various services,” he said. “Apparently this mail was meant for someone else.”

Authorities said the marijuana is worth more than $7,000 on the street.

in the last few weeks i've seen a few shows and i just haven't gotten around to reviewing yet.

THE STROKES

the strokes played the bank of america pavilion on september 12th.

wolfmother opened. i *really* enjoyed them live. i love their album and their live set is solid. they are not a band i can listen to everyday, but their energy and commitment is infectious. the joker & the thief is a great song. find it and listen.

i have to say that if this was the only time i'd seen the strokes live i would have been slightly disappointed. poor julian seemed to be quite ill...his voice kept going out on him. he tried to make up for it with fun banter with the crowd, but the other boys weren't having it. however, he still sang the whole set and got through it with minimal fuck ups.

not quite as good as the show i saw a few months ago...i would say it is time of the boys to have some serious r&r...they seem a bit burnt out. but overall an enjoyable evening.

on a side note, the venue served coffee....this is the best idea EVER.

a chilly september evening of rock and roll accompanied by hot coffee. genius.

A mannequin depicting a prisoner (described as a Guantanamo Bay victim) was reportedly snuck into one of the dioramas alongside of Disneyland's Big Thunder Mountain last week. it was up for an hour and a half before security caught on.

some news re: ME!

well, it looks like after all this interviewing and getting ready to leave my job that i will actually be staying. yesterday they made me an offer to stay. this offer was $10,000 more a year than i'm getting from them now. and its full time. i'm not 100% sure yet, but i'm pretty sure i'm going to go in today and accept their offer.

and my new roomate has arrived. its weird. VERY weird. but at least he's polite. he calls me darling and opens doors for me.

so many new things.... check back with me soon to see if i'm still sane.

"Denied a cheeseburger, gentleman attempts to electrocute police and K9

A 39-year-old gentleman, clothed in boxer shorts, was arrested after punching through a plate glass window with his his fist to gain ingress to a McDonalds quick service restaurant at 3am. Police were quick to arrive on the scene, but their attempts to capture Adalberto Cardoso were foiled, because he was covered in perspiration and his own blood, making him too slippery to grip.

Police surrounded Mr. Cardoso inside the restaurant but he escaped by jumping through a broken window. Outside, Mr. Cardoso encountered a police dog, punched it in the mouth and neck, and jumped back through the broken window into the restaurant.

The police re-entered the restaurant and found Mr. Cardoso standing on top of a shake machine. As the police approached, Mr. Cardoso "began throwing handfuls of milkshake at the police and the police dog, officers allege."

When Mr. Cardoso pulled the machine from the wall, the dog attacked him and knocked him to the ground. The quick-thinking Mr. Cardoso put the shake machine's 220-volt power cord in his mouth and announced, "I'm going to kill us all." When he bit into the electrical cord, the dog and three officers received electrical shocks. Mr. Cardoso released the cord after a police officer struck him on the shoulder with a fighting baton.

Mr. Cardoso was arrested and charged with cruelty to animals, breaking and entering, assault on police officers. and resisting arrest."

now maybe its because i'm not a HUGE beer drinker, but i really just don't get this.
